Sindh stands among the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world. The Indus River, historically known as the Sindhu River, has shaped the identity, culture, and economy for thousands of years. The river that gave the region its name sustained agriculture, trade, and urban life for millennia.
The Indus Valley Civilization flourished here around 2600 BCE, with cities such as Mohenjo Daro displaying advanced urban planning, drainage systems, and trade networks.
Empires passed through this land, including the Mauryans, the Rai and Brahman dynasties, Arab rule after 712 CE, the Mughals, and the Talpurs.
Karachi later emerged as a major port under British rule. Sindh has remained a cultural and economic gateway of the region for centuries.
Sindh became a separate province under British India in April 1936. The first provincial elections were held in 1937 under the Government of India Act 1935. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Sindh continued as a province of the new state.
